ANSO

Homestay is the best when it comes to experience delicious homemade food.
Thanks to the families I stayed with, I had the opportunity to eat a wonderful variety of Japanese food such as Takoyaki, Shabu Shabu, Ramen, Tonkatsu, Temakizushi… Even though I have the possibility to eat Japanese food in Paris, the taste is not the same! I particularly appreciated the breakfast, fusion between western and Japanese meal with fresh fruits from the region.
The food we ate at the Yasuragi café in Manyo Park was also delicious, in particular Zaru Soba and Zaru Udon (cold noodles), which are the best during hot days. And thanks to the Japanese ladies of the café we could try different deserts and ice cream, all delicious.
Every time we went to visit somewhere, we tried the food specialties: Izumo Soba, Hiroshima Okunomiyaki, Miyajima cooked oysters and Momiji Manju, and we bought Omiyage (food souvenir) for our Japanese families. The Omiyage is an aspect of the Japanese culture that I like a lot.
I was very happy to cook some French food the last day for all the people who treated me to restaurants and allowed me to enjoy the real taste of Japanese food.

TOMI

We lived in the house of the host family, so every day ate homemade food and in a cafe. Japanese food is very different from Russian, but it is delicious. I especially like tempura, kakigori, udon, onigiri and okonomiyaki. Masuda is a city near the sea, so there is very tasty and fresh fish. Most of the dishes I ate for the first time in my life. In the house, mother cooked Gyoza, salad, miso-soup, rice, takoyaki.
In Manyo park we ate soba, udon, red onigiri (before I ate only white onigiri), meat and fish.
In Masuda I first time ate traditional Japanese sweets. And in Hiroshima we eat okonomiyaki, it is really delicious!
In weekend our family went to the sushi bar, where a plate of sushi spinning on the conveyor. It was very interesting! And sushi literally melted in the mouth. Russian sushi is prepared not from a fresh fish.
I think, what Japanese foods is not just food, it is art.

Ayaka

In the work camp, we could eat a lot of kinds of local food of Shimane.

When we went to Izumo, we eat Izumo soba which is popular in Shimane. Izumo soba is really delicious, and I think the way to eat that soba is interesting. Usually, we eat soba by dipping it in the mentuyu sauce, but in Izumo, we eat soba by sprinkling mentuyu sauce over it. And that plates are particular, I think. Usually, plate of soba is zaru which is made of bamboo. However, the one in Izumo is composed of bowls placed on top of each other.

I also ate other local food of Shimane. It is called Akatenand it is made of pasted fish and contains hot pepper. The taste of Akaten is spicy and very good. I ate baked Akaten in my host family house, but I heard the way to eat Akaten is different in each house, for example, boiled and fried.

During the work camp, I could take delicious meals everyday thanks to my host family mother. Every dish had a wonderful taste, and I felt her love from each dish. Unexpectedly, I also had a chance to eat Russian food during the home stay. My home stay friend, Tomi cooked it using materials which she brought from Russia. The name of the meal is “grichika”. (I heard so and it means soba in Japanese) The meal tasted good although I had never eaten Russian food before.
Since we were talking about a lot of things during meals with them, I could enjoy each meal much more.
