Volunteer Works

Caroline

When I first get a notice about the volunteer project in Manyo Park, I thought that the activities which me and the other three volunteers will be doing here would be really hard, and in a way dirty, since I have read on internet that volunteers were going to do the park maintenance. Finally I did not work alone, thanks to the other volunteers and to the kindness of the Manyo Park guys although the summer in Japan is really hot and grueling the volunteer activities were not as hard as I thought.

I've started my working project on the 30th of July, and now I've been working here for two weeks. The work here in Masuda Manyo Park is hard, mostly due to because of the hot temperatures and the wet climate typical of Japan. But is really satisfying. We do something diffrent every day, and the jobs are both useful for gaining some experience and for getting better in touch with a japanese point of view which is not touristic. At the end, when we finlly got the day of taketoro event, I knew it was worth it.

Before going to Manyo Park I thought that working in a park means watering and maintaining. However, there are other works too. Since there are a lot of events in Manyo park I also help preparing for the events.
The 1st event was “Balloon Art” where we shaped balloon with cute kids, one of them I met again in the 3rd event – Jun-chan. The 2nd event was Ground Golf, where I was really surprised with the strength of the elderly in Japan.
The main event was “Bamboo lantern”, in which I have so much fun preparing and helping. We were wearing Yukata and selling foods from our countries. There was Tiramisu, Taco and “Gỏi cuốn” and “Gỏi”. I was really surprising that the Japanese really liked “Gỏi cuốn” and “Gỏi”.
There were many different kind of works and we also received many helps and guiding from Manyo Park’s employees.
